Bruce was in a hurry to get started. He learnt to take apart and rebuild gearboxes, and push engines to their limit. By the age of 14, he and his father had built his first race car.
At 16, he entered a hill climb in place of his father, on the beach at Muriwai, near Auckland, and won. This became a habit. At 22, he became the youngest Formula 1 Grand Prix winner of his time.
