A CORE OF CARBON FIBRE

Light, strong and incredibly stiff, the carbon fibre MonoCell is at the heart of the  650S Can-Am.

Bruce McLaren strove to minimise weight and maximise power in designing the McLaren Can-Am cars of 50 years ago. Today, the materials have changed but the philosophy and ethos remain the same – a lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell is key to the 650S Can-Am’s exceptional performance. Weighing just 75kg, the MonoCell contributes to a stunning power-to-weight ratio of 485PS (478bhp) per tonne, enough to accelerate the 650S Can-Am from zero to 100kph (62mph) in just 3.0 seconds.

 

Exceptionally strong and stiff, the MonoCell provides outstanding crash protection for occupants, which means there is no loss of rigidity for this retractable-hardtop supercar compared with McLaren Super Series coupé models. Because no additional bracing is required to stiffen the Spider body, unlike rivals manufactured from steel or aluminium, the weight gained is kept to a minimum – under 40kg. 

 

Thanks to dependably stiff foundations that form the perfect basis for suspension tuning, the MonoCell also contributes to the 650S Can-Am’s ability to both corner like a race car, and glide over bumpy roads with absolute compliance.

NO ROOF, NO COMPROMISE

The retractable hardtop combines the refinement of a coupé with the exhilaration of a Spider.

 

A retractable hardtop allows you to choose between the insulation and security of a coupé, or the immersive open-air thrills of a Spider. Simply press a button and the roof raises or lowers in under 17 seconds at speeds of up to 40kph (24mph) for maximum convenience.

 

If you want to hear more of the McLaren 650S Can-Am’s 3.8-litre V8 engine without lowering the roof, the heated rear screen can be electrically lowered – the result is more driver engagement, yet no increase in wind buffeting.

 

The 650S Can-Am’s retractable hardtop is uniquely manufactured in carbon fibre. The lightweight material means the Spider weighs under 40kg more than a 650S Coupé, despite its electrically operated roof mechanism. It really is the best of both worlds.
